Though established more than 230 years ago, Veuve Clicquot remains the most innovative house of Champagne, true to the inspiring values of Madame Clicquot, La Grande Dame of Champagne. One of the world's first great businesswomen, she took over the running of the business in 1805 when widowed at the age of 27 years old.

Rule breaking and bold from the outset, not only did Madame Clicquot invent the process of remuage, or riddling, by which champagne becomes delightfully clear, and soon adopted by all champagne houses, but in 1814 she also opened up new business streams in the Imperial Russian Court despite the blockades throughout the Napoleonic Wars. Furthermore she secured a legacy of ownership of some of the best vineyard locations in the Champagne region, a total of 286 hectares supporting her philosophy of ‘only one quality - the finest'.
